Chapter Twenty

Sebastian

The hunting cabin is a forty-five minute drive from the house through some beautiful country. The views of the valley and surrounding peaks are phenomenal.

Frank’s home away from home is about a third of the size of the main house, which means, still damn big. It sits nestled in the forest west of Aspen with hiking, or maybe hunting, trails heading uphill above it. Thomas, Ben, Reid, and I unload supplies and get everything inside.

I figured out from the conversation on the drive up that Frank is too old for the sometimes frigid temperatures, long distance walking, crouching, and occasional climbing that the hunting trips required. So he hung out in the cabin, caught up on the news, and drank coffee and then Scotch while the “boys” crept through the woods freezing their butts off. At least it’s not cold in July.

“I can stick around and keep you company,” I offer to Frank while the others gear up to go out. I’m actually looking forward to shooting, but I thought he might welcome the chance to get to know me a bit, given I’m supposed to be marrying his youngest daughter. He stares at me like I’ve suddenly changed into a dress.

“Afraid of a little hiking?”

He’s joking, but I have a hard time not rolling my eyes. I’ve hiked in much harsher conditions than this.

“No thanks, Sebastian,” Frank says. “Go enjoy yourself with your . . . camera.”

You bet I will, I don’t say. I zip up my waterproof jacket, grab my camera bag, and follow the others into the thick forest surrounding the cabin.

“Thomas and I usually go together,” Ben says, “so Seb, you’re with Reid.”

Reid smiles like he won the lottery. I’d rather go by myself but whatever.

Thomas looks at his watch. “We’ll meet back at the cabin in a couple of hours for lunch with Dad, then head out again this afternoon. See you guys then.” Reid and I walk one direction, and Ben and Thomas another.

I lift my camera. “Hope you don’t mind if I wander around. I’ll be looking for different kinds of shots than you.”

“No problem,” Reid says.

“How long have you been hunting?” I ask to make small talk. We can’t exactly spend the next three hours in silence. Then again, it’s hunting. Being quiet is probably part of the deal. That and drinking beer, given the sheer number of six-packs they put in that cooler.

“Since high school. Frank always invited me to go along when he took Thomas, Henry, and then Ben. He used to say, ‘Any son of mine will know how to put food on the table when push comes to shove.’” He imitates Frank’s deep, scratchy voice perfectly. “I was seventeen. Didn’t exactly have marriage on the brain yet. Sex, yes, but not marriage.”

Okay, I definitely don’t want to hear about the sex he wanted to have with Bea. I change the subject in a hurry. “Henry hunted?”

“He went a few times, but he perfected the art of disappearing in the woods and never actually shooting anything.
